Master recordings are recordings of a song that were originally used on an album that song appeared on. The Rock Band 2 on-disk setlist contains all master recordings, and all Downloadable Content released since Summer 2008 are master recordings. Rock Band and previous downloadable content does contain cover songs (songs that were recorded by Harmonix without members from the original band to use as songs).
